José Bedia, Sarabanda son los hierros, 1993

The Puerto Rican Museum of Art (MAPR) is currently hosting the first solo exhibition by Cuban artist José Bedia to be presented on the island. Curated by Juan Carlos López Rivero, the exhibition “¿Cómo empezó todo?” (How did everything begin?) celebrates the 10th anniversary of this Puerto Rican institution.

On view through April 4, the exhibition includes seven paintings, four drawings, and an installation, all reflecting themes and visual motifs that recur in much of Bedia’s work. Over the years, the artist has delved deeply into Amerindian cultures, blending this knowledge with his own Afro-Cuban religious beliefs and a broadly universalist, ecologically-minded sensibility.
